Celebrating UK-Russia Scientific Collaboration On Tuesday 11 May 2004, the Royal
Society, in partnership with the UK
Office of Science and Technology, held an event to both celebrate and showcase
UK - Russia scientific collaboration. The day was focus on materials
science (a scientific strength in both countries).

Shtansky from Moscow State
Institute of Steel and Alloys together with their colleagues Prof. A. Matthews,
Dr. A. Leyland and Dr. A.L. Yerokhin from the University
of Sheffield have attended this meeting.
In the morning there were a series of talks including a key note speech from
Lord Sainsbury, UK Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Science and
Innovation, Prof. Andrei Fursenko, Russian Minister for Education and Science,
and Sir David King, UK Chief Scientific Adviser. In the afternoon, there
was an opportunity for topic discussions in small seminar groups about future
UK-Russia cooperation.
From May 12 to May 14 Prof. E.A. Levashov and Prof. D.V. Shtansky
visited the University of Sheffield
in order to collaborate on the joint research project funded by The Royal
Society of the UK entitled: Novel SHS source materials for deposition of nanocomposite
tribological coatings.
